The Beauty in Baked Goods :)

Before you judge, I'm not some sort of food addict, I just think they're a treat for the eyes (and occasionally the belly). Gaze upon the prettiness of the pictures and I'm sure you'll agree.

I'm not sure quite why I aquired such a hunger (ha, get it? Hunger...) for pictures of buns, but I do know how it started. One plain day when I had nothing better to do but search for pictures of dolls I loved as a child called 'cupcakes' I happened to enter it into an image search engine and as well as the aforementioned dolls, many picture of queen cakes (the Irish term for cupcakes) popped up. They weren't the normal one sone sees in everyday bakery windows, these were special. These looked like somoeone's Mother or Grandmother had designed them specifically to bring a smile to someone's face because they're so special. The funny thing is, my own Mother does the same. When she has the time, she bakes me beautiful creations decorated with coloured icing and cherries a plenty. I really must start taking pictures of them because to me, those are the most special buns of all.
I went on searching for similar images and by now I must have at least a hundred. I don't just save any old ones, I save the one that make me feel warm and even childish inside. At the end of the day, it is very juvenile, but that's what I love about it all. The images you'll see here are just the tip of the iceberg, but they're some of my favourites. So go ahead, feast your eyes (I crack myself up!)

Of course, I don't discriminate. I enjoy cake too (as you probably noticed on the first page) it isn't as handy as queen cakes but it's more easily shared. My Mother is a superb cake baker and I love it when she makes sponge. It's my Brother's favourite and we always have it on his birthday. I hear she makes a mean Christmas cake too, but I don't like it so I try to avoid it. The only thing I have to do with it is decorating it. I love sticking the little plastic men into the icing to make it look like a winter scene. When my Nana died, we saved all the little decorations she used and now we put them on our own cakes. For me, it's a way of remembering her at such a special time.
Despite my better judgement, I love chocolate biscuit cake. t lacks any kind of aeshthetic beauty, but I can't deny it's heaveny taste. It's a bit of a curse though because it's sold at a very low price in a superb deli near my home. I'm always tempted to buy it, but I've only done so once. My Mom makes a great little one too. She usually buts a bit of sherry into it, to give it that extra kick. In fact, she usually puts a little bit of alcohol in most desserts. Typical Irish I suppose.

My own baking can be quite dodgy. It has incredible variation. Sometimes it's so good my Mother showers me with praises and tries to rope me into doing all the baking from now on. Other times, it's so bad I throw it away before anyone can see or taste it. Last week my new boy ( :) ) was back to school so I decided I'd do something nice to cheer him up. I went and got ingredients for cookies that looked so nice on the packaging. The mixing process went fine and when I read the recipe it said not to grease the tray. This struck me as more than slightly odd, but I obeyed, wanting them to be great. They smelled amazing when the timer beeped. On closer inspection, I found them to be light and crispy on the outside, with a gooey middle, just the way I like them. The trouble erupted when I attemped to remove them from the tray. They were stuck! After much cursing, scraping and gnashing of teeth I only removed the bare minimum. Quel dommage! He ate some of them, but shamefully, it was I who ate most of the shards.

....time is up, fools! Julia, the lovely, sweet Julia has won my heart and indeed my belly with the beautiful buns she cooked me. They were a joy to behold. Lemon queen cakes with iced bunnies on every one. *Sigh* Just the memory of them makes me feel all warm and fluffy inside. I'll post a picture as soon as I can find the ones I took. Kudos to you Jules, kudos!
